Solar updraft tower is a type of renewable-energy power plant. Air is heated in a very large circular greenhouse-like structure, and escapes through a high tower. The moving air drives turbines, that produce electricity.
A research prototype operated in Spain in the 1980s.
The prototype in Spain was built 150 km from Madrid. The chimney was 195 meters tall and outputted 50 Kw.

In early 2007, a company called Enviro Mission, started developing a large-scale project in Australia.
One 200MW power station will be built and will provide enough electricity to around 200,000 typical Australian households and will abate over 900,000 tonnes of greenhouse producing gases from entering the environment annually.
Its 1000 meters tower will probably be the highest structure in the world.
EnviroMission’s Solar Tower is proposed to generate electricity 24-hours a day. The power station will be at its most efficient on the hottest days when energy is most needed and peak prices are paid for electricity.
EnviroMission has selected a site for the world's first Solar Tower power station in the Buronga district of the Wentworth Shire in NSW and 25km northeast of Mildura in Victoria.
The selling price of Solar Tower renewable energy will be based on the average peak pool electricity price paid to generators plus an additional renewable energy credit incentive paid by retailers.
